As for a buyers guide . I think forums are the best bet , here`s a few things to look for

Engine : Plenum gasket , very common in the V-8 . Visually look inside the throttle body for oil deposits , I mean pooling oil , if present , the plenum needs a new gasket
: Oil leaks , rear main seal is a common issue , valve cover gaskets another . Check both pinions and t-case output seals .

Transfer case : This jeep your viewing has a NP249 AWD case . Great case but one major flaw called a viscous coupling . It`s a small sealed viscous filled clutch pack that transfers power to the frt wheels when rear wheel slippage is detected . When this starts to fail , it puts alot of stress on other parts , diff, cv`s etc .
To test the VC , get the Jeep to full operating temp and do tight left and right circles on dry pavement . It should be a smooth process , if the Jeep binds like it`s in 4X4 , and you`ll know what I mean if it does , the VC is bad and quite expensive to replace . In N America , you`d be doing a swap again for a NP231/242

Be sure to check all electrical items , windows , locks , switches etc etc . Check the A/C for correct operation , loud compressor noises , and foul smells from dirt and mold

Rust , the most common issue with rust I`ve seen will be found on the frt of the rocker panel and lower frt fenders , get down there and take a look .
